Elderly Co-culture Interview Essay

â€Å"Everything has changed since I was your age†, is what my grandmother had to say when asked about her experience growing up. My grandmother, Mrs. Ruby Parker Sloan was born on December 6th, 1943 in a small town in Ohio. She was raised in a small farmhouse along with 4 sisters. Her mother was a usual woman of her time; one that stayed at home with the children, cooked, cleaned and maintained the house. Her father was also a usual man of his time; one that worked throughout the hours of the day in order to provide for his family-a man that had been working since the age of 9 years old. My grandmother has raised 4 children, including myself; so she has seen firsthand the changes and differences in not only her and my generations, but the generations in between. She has experienced the changes of racism, technology, parenting, morals, warfare and many other aspects of our society. For her, she felt society as a whole has changed dramatically. One of her main concerns of the differences of now and then was the differences in parenting. She pointed out that during her time it was unheard of for there to be a school shooting similar to that of the Columbine or Virginia Tech incidents. She felt that had a lot to do with parenting itself; that parents were obviously not concerned with their children and/or not involved enough in their lives to know that they were planning to commit a mass murder of their peers with weapons stored under their own roof. Another point that concerned her was the difference in child discipline. She is a firm believer in â€Å"whipping† your child rather than â€Å"no, no† and the notorious â€Å"five second count† used by parents today. She stated that children need to understand the consequences to certain actions†¦most of which can cause harm to themselves or others. One thing she said about her experience as a parent was â€Å"Some kids just need a good spankin‘â€Å". My grandmother told me that you would never see a child telling their parents â€Å"no† or â€Å"I hate you† during her time, it just didn’t happen. â€Å"There was a level of respect between children and their parents then, something that a lot of kids today just don’t have any more†¦that’s the parents’ fault† is what she told me. Today’s culture was something my grandmother felt strongly about. She felt that one of the downfalls of our culture today was the promotion of sex everywhere you turn, which â€Å"especially influences the young ones of today† she stated. She felt that this advertising in music, television, and everywhere else you go only teaches kids the pleasure and excitement of sex itself instead of the morality and consequences involved. My grandmother continued to tell me a scenario where she was driving to the store a few weeks ago and she heard a song with the chorus â€Å"birthday sex† and that the person singing it sounded very young. â€Å"What the hell is that all about† she said. â€Å"It’s terrible how these adults that promote and advertise this stuff are okay with it† she stated. My grandmother said television didn’t even show pregnant women on it when she was growing up, her parents also slept in different beds during that time. Elvis Presley was looked upon badly by parents of her time because of the sexual nature of his dancing. â€Å"You can’t even turn to the family channel without seeing a show about a pregnant teenager or some sort of sexual thing going on†¦it’s just sad† she said. She also felt that this promotion of sex to kids and young adults was the cause of self esteem issues and that it was also the culprit for a lot of kids these days â€Å"thinkin’ they’re grown because sex is such a cool and grown up thing to do†. Sex these days, to her, is doing nothing but sending the wrong message to young adults about self appearance and decision making when it comes down to right or wrong. When my grandmother was growing up technology was, a fortunate family on the street owning a black and white television. There was no email, texting, cell-phones, etc. People still solely relied on the old fashioned stamp and envelope method†¦or even a more advanced version†¦the telegram. My grandmother always mentions how much she loves her high definition, flat screen television; something she could never imagine existing as a child. My grandmother always seems to be amazed by technology today, and it also seems she is usually ten years behind the understanding of today’s technology. During our conversation, she continually referred to her DVD player as a â€Å"VCR†. She also seemed amazed by the advancement in today’s computer and video games to that of even when I was a child with a first generation Nintendo. My grandmother has been around to go from the record player, 8track player, cassette player, CD player, all the way to the digital MP3 players that can hold thousands of songs in something half the size of a deck of cards, â€Å"it just amazes me†¦technology today†¦just imagine where it will be when you’re [me] my age! † she said. Talking to my grandmother in an interview fashion was a very interesting experience. It gave me insight on a different time that was experienced by someone†¦a time that has passed and will never be relived the same. It caused me to think of how I am at the same point in my life that she was at my age; it also caused me to wonder how things will differ from today and two generations from now. Society has changed drastically since my grandmothers’ generation and it will continue to grow throughout mine the same†¦hopefully for the better, but I guess it’s all about who you ask.

Online Education vs. Traditional Education

While most believe online education is easy as the student is just sitting in front of the computer, attending class online is more challenging than attending class in a classroom because requires time management skills and requires self-discipline. Attending college online requires the college student to have excellent time management skills. The majority of online students have responsibilities other than attending school. Usually this is why the decision to attend school online is made. The online student must be able to balance school, work, and a family. Attending school at a traditional school is not as flexible as the time schedule is set in place and the student must arrange their schedule around school, work, and family. Online education allows more flexibility in the online class schedule. However, proper management must be maintained in order to balance all of the responsibilities and be successful in all areas. â€Å"Not only do students need to monitor their progress in an ongoing fashion and adjust their strategies for learning based on their progress, they also need to maintain a time management schedule in order to complete online learning activities in the allotted timeframes. (Orellana, Hudgins, & Simonson, 2009, p. 470). The online student must be able to continue to work full-time and take care of family. All of these things must be done including attending school. Adding online education to the list of responsibility may assist the online student becomes well organized. An online student can possibly check-in the onl ine classroom during lunchtime while at work. Homework assignments can be done during â€Å"homework hour† at home with the children. In order to be successful attending school online, the online college student must practice self-discipline. In a traditional classroom, the student the instructor holds the student accountable for all assignments and participation in class. While the same applies for the online college student, accountability is the student. There will not be a â€Å"reminder† from the instructor on a daily basis whether the student is participating in the discussion group or if the student has completed an assignment. Online learning can be more convenient, effective and rewarding than traditional classes, but convenience doesn't mean it's easier,† says Gwen Hillesheim, interim chief academic officer and provost of Colorado Technical University, a leading provider of education for career-motivated students. â€Å"Successful online students need to be proactive in their studies and take responsibility for their own learning. It takes self-discipline and time management to do your best. But when the student is engaged, the learning can be significant and the experience fulfilling. Self-discipline is required as it is solely up to the student to log in each day and participate in class. Unlike traditional classrooms where the schedule is set and students are reminded by staff daily to participate; the University notifies online students that do not make the required participation requirements after they have failed to do so. Most individuals that opt to attend school online are returning to school to complete a college degree. Usually this option is chosen due to work schedule as well as time with the family. Online education is not for everyone as it takes great discipline and maturity in order to be a successful online student. â€Å"At the same time, online education is not for everyone — you have to have a certain level of maturity and self-motivation, since you have to juggle coursework with job and family responsibilities. It demands a great deal of individualized work and you have to manage your schedule to meet class requirements rather than attend at a specific time of the week. â€Å"Michele Smolik, Director of Instructional Technology at Columbia College. Traditional students usually are not full-time employees. A person attending a University on campus is usually either taking one class or a full-time student working a part-time job. Online education allows an individual to maintain a full-time job however in order to qualify as a full-time student two classes are taken at a time. Traditional students attending class on campus have the advantage of accessing the instructor during class instruction if a question should arise. Online students must communicate with instructors via email or by utilizing the message board located on the student portal. This type of learning is not the right choice for everyone as some need individual instruction. Some argue that online students are â€Å"teaching† themselves, as there is no verbal instruction from an instructor. At most online universities instruction is given weekly during the discussion group forum by the instructor. The online student must make it a responsibility to participate in weekly discussion forums as well as keep up with weekly readings. Students that delay themselves in participating in the discussion group usually maintain a low grade. All of this is vital in order to be a successful online student. Assignments for class are usually due weekly and due at the end of the week. Students must submit the assignment via the class portal. It is imperative that the student have the correct software in order to submit the assignment as it is the student’s responsibility that the assignment is submitted on time with no exceptions. This is not an issue for traditional students as instructors are able to accept assignments in person from students. Essays and other assignments can be submitted by hard copy, which eliminates the concern of computer complications or the non-compatibility of software with the University. Online education has been debated throughout the years of its brief existence however most will agree that it is much more challenging than traditional education. Attending school is challenging whether in a traditional classroom setting or attending school online as responsibility is the main factor. However, as an online student it is imperative to be organized, responsible, and maintain strict discipline in order to be a successful online student. These factors make attending school online much more difficult as it is magnified much more.

Blockbuster Hbr Case Essay One of Blockbuster’s biggest value drivers is geographic location. Most people, especiall in urban areas live pretty close to a Blockbuster location. Availability of titles is also a value driver that not all video stores can provide. Their reputation is also a value driver. Economies of scale are one of Blockbuster’s largest cost drivers. The ability to negotiate with movie studios with leverage while their competitors can’t as effectively win lower prices for inventory purchases gives a huge advantage. The aforementioned reasons are ammunition to defened against competitors. Geographic location and leveraging the brand name recognition are two of the most important advantages that Blockbuster has that none of its competitors can easily overcome. After the formation of Blockbuster, the first major technological substitute to come along was the DVD (the digital versatile disc) and the DIVX (digital video express disc). There was a fierce battle between these two rival substitutes as they waged war. Both were looking to become the sole technology that would replace VHS. Blockbuster remained on the sidelines for the first few years after these technologies were introduced even though 8 major motion picture studios had committed to either DIVX or DVD (6 for DIVX and 2 for DVD) Once Antioco had made a decsion as to back DVD for a multitude of reasons, Blockbuster’s decision would lead to the demise of DIVX. Antico decided that DVD offered the most promise. They were more widespread, DVD player units were more readily available and they were cheaper. About a year after Blockbuster decided to back DVD, Circuit City decided to give up on the DIVX technology. Blockbuster also faced competition from consumer’s decsion to buy DVDs as opposed to renting them(sell through). Antioco saw this as a potential threat and decided to sell through used DVDs at a discount at Blockbuster stores. Along with some promotions, such as a free rental with the purchase of a movie, Antioco’s plan was expected to triple Blockbuster’s share of the video sales market. In 2003 Disney developed a technology much like DIVX called EZ-D. The plan was eliminate the return of rented videos as the disc would be discared 48 hours after opening because a chemical would render it useless. The technology ultimately failed as Blockbuster did not back the technology because for just a few dollars more (EZ-D discs retailed at $5-$7) consumers could outright purchase a DVD with unlimited use. One of the newest substitutes to threaten blockbuster is online video sales. This market is cannabilizing Blockbuster’s sell through numbers and Blockbuster is countering with their own online sales. Another is home delivery service. Even though this service had promise with more than a few firms, they all failed for a multitude of reasons and never posed a real threat. Netflix, a video subscription service with no late fees is also a substitute that Blockbuster is facing. After much initial success, Blockbuster decided to start their own subscription pricing model in which consumers can pay a flat fee each month for unlimitied rentals at their retail outlets. Eventually adding the feature where consumers can opt to either receive/return the discs through the mail similar to netflix or to receive/return them at a retail location to satisfy an immediate need. Given the popularity of Moodle, CULC also implemented the system across its campuses for the ease of students. Although many advantages are there of Moodle, it has been subjected to criticism as a communication tool in CULC. Critical Evaluation Moodle is an open source system which subjects it to many criticisms of being of this system. Open source systems as suggested by Petrus and Sanky (2007) are risky to implement because the modules used for such systems are not proven. It is also argued that open source software is costly to administer as it depends on continuous changing resources and evolving patches and upgrades. Such is the case wit h Moodle. Problems occur with Moodle during too much customization which makes it unable to be integrated with student information and administrations system, used as an administration model to support many departments and campuses at once, sophisticated capabilities for assessing and grading assignments and quizzes, and a complete proper software with navigating and learning materials (Cole and Foster, 2007). Moodle, on the surface, looks like an excellent learning system for CULC. Teachers and students can communicate with each other through this system. In addition, homework, assignments and quizzes can be set and completed online. The implementation of Moodle as a communication tool at CULC remains a critical issue. Any community needs followers without which it would be useless. Likewise, if no students contribute their knowledge to the discussions, the communication module of Moodle is useless. This is exactly the case in CULC. Students are not motivated to use Moodle as a com munication tool because of which forums and discussions are closed for communication by default which is a technological error in Moodle. The feature of ‘quiz module’ is sometimes used to set assignments or homework which is distracting for students. An instructor sometimes sets quizzes, announces deadlines or assignments through this module which is failure of Moodle as a communication tool (Cole and Foster, 2007). Technical issues such as the quiz can be submitted for automatic marking as many times as possible even after the limits imposed by the instructor remains problem for the Moodle operators as it is still to be tested for adequacy (Cole and Foster, 2007). The features of forums and group discussions are not so important features of the Moodle on which much emphasis has been given by the creators of it as instructors already have the email lists for the students which allows them to communicate through the email (Petrus and Sanky, 2007). In addition to this, Pe trus and Sanky (2007) also argue that resources, tutorials and documentation are not stored on the CULC Moodle which would not be so if placed on the campus websites. The major criticism that CULC Moodle has received is the underdeveloped Moodle websites and lack of time for improving the websites to provide the students with a more customized and fully functional website. Furthermore, many students are not fully adept to use the Moodle interface and prefer face-to-face communication as means of learning. Although many instructors are focusing on educating the students on the usage of Moodle, it will still take time for students to become completely adaptive to the e-learning environment (Moodle, 2006; Petrus and Sanky, 2007).
